Announced on March 13th, The Bama Theatre will be purchased by the Tuscaloosa County Commission for approximately 3.5 million dollars, after having reached an agreement with the Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority. Sandy Wolfe, executive director of the Arts and Humanities Council of Tuscaloosa, says there will be an emphasis on preserving the Bama Theatre’s history and continuing to provide a community space for groups that don’t have such facilities.
On March 28th, the “Remembering Jack Warner: An American Patriot” documentary will be screened at the Bama Theater free of charge at 1:30 pm. The documentary details the life of Jack Warner, the late former president and chairman of the Westervelt Company, as well as a lover of early American art. The filmmakers and Susan Warner, the chairwoman of the Warner Foundation, will host a 30 minute “talkback” after the showing
On March 21, more than 1,400 participants participated in the 8th annual Selma to Montgomery 51-Mile Relay and Bike Ride. The runners and cyclists took the same route taken during the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March of 1965. 95% of participants were from outside Alabama, highlighting, as co-director Virgil Chames asserts, the event’s significance as a “walk through history.”
The Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission will host Sweet Home 250 at American Village on July 3rd and 4th, 2026. The festival will include performances from Alabama artists, historic battle reenactments, art exhibitions, and culinary experiences, amongst other activities. Get your tickets soon!
The US Mint is redesigning several circulating coins in celebration of America’s 250th birthday. Designs will depict crucial events in American history like the Gettysburg Address and the voyage of the Mayflower. While they are already out in circulation, Paul Hollis, the director of the US Mint, advises those interested to request coins from their banks.
