Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park Living History Event

 Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park, established in 1830, hosted a Living History event on Saturday, March 7th. The event offered visitors the opportunity to step into everyday life in nineteenth century Alabama, with historical people stationed around the park, telling the stories of a multitude of crafters and the resilience of the enslaved people who resided at Tannehill.

Governor Kay Ivey advocates for Alabama students to compete in national Presidential 1776 Award Contest

At the end of February, Governor Kay Ivey invited Alabama high school students to compete in the Presidential 1776 Award Contest. Participants must first take an online civics exam called the Impossible Test, of which the top performers from each state then advance first to semifinals, then a nationally broadcasted finalist competition in Washington DC. Top competitors win $250,000 in scholarship money. 

25 Alabama trailblazers recognized by This is Alabama’s Women Who Shape the State

On Thursday March 5th, This is Alabama recognized 25 honorees at the Thirteenth Annual Women Who Shape the State event. Such trailblazers include Dana Barber, state coordinator of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (and creator of a college prep program for Alabama students with vision loss), Mary H. Van Brunt, president of Spring Hill College, and Salaam Green, the poet laureate of Birmingham as well as the founder of Literary Healing Arts.

Freedom Plane to Fly Historical Documents Across the Country 

Beginning in March, the Freedom Plane will carry some of the United States’ founding documents on a national tour. Traveling historical documents include the 1783 Treaty of Paris, which ended the Revolutionary War, as well as a draft of the Constitution with Second Continental Congress delegates’ handwritten notes. The Freedom Plane will make stops in Los Angeles, Atlanta, and Houstin, amongst other US cities. 

Greyhound to Offer More Connections in Anticipation of the Semiquincentennial

Greyhound is making it easier for Americans to celebrate the Semiquincentennial by reducing rates and connecting those in rural areas to more than 1,600 destinations including Washington DC., Philadelphia, and Boston. 

Congress Debates What Should Go Inside Congressional Time Capsule

Congress plans to bury a time capsule on the Fourth of July that will not be opened until July 4th, 2276- America’s 500th birthday. Proposed time capsule items include Meatloaf’s greatest hits and a stress ball.
