INTERCEPT Task Force Launches at Synergic Center

A collaborative initiative to strengthen law enforcement and safeguard those most vulnerable

On Monday, Synergic Center hosted the official launch of the West Alabama INTERCEPT Task Force, a collaboration between local law enforcement agencies and Operation Light Shine. Formerly the West Alabama Human Trafficking Task Force, this initiative strengthens efforts to combat human trafficking and child exploitation across the region. The task force brings together personnel from the Tuscaloosa Police Department, Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office Northport Police Department, and the University of Alabama, leveraging enhanced resources and technology. The expansion will provide more space for the task force, including for state and federal partners, as well as additional educational resources.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Synergic Center marked the opening of the new INTERCEPT Task Force headquarters, with law enforcement officials, elected leaders, and community stakeholders in attendance. Speakers included State Senator Gerald Allen, Tuscaloosa County Probate Judge and Commission Chair Rob Robertson, City of Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Tuscaloosa Police Chief Sebo Sanders, Captain Brad Jones, Chief Deputy G.W. Keller of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, and Bryan Weight, Executive Director of Operation Light Shine, who delivered keynote remarks. Following the ceremony, attendees toured the facility, which features expanded workspace, multiple interview rooms, and advanced investigative technology to support task force operations.

“This partnership helps close critical gaps,” said Bryan Weight. “Evil thrives in silence and where resources fall short. Today, we are taking steps to ensure no child is left unseen, unheard, or unprotected.” Operation Light Shine supports law enforcement by providing investigative technology, equipment, and resources such as software, vehicles, and salary assistance to expand the reach and effectiveness of anti-trafficking efforts. The new headquarters more than doubles available workspace and is expected to significantly enhance both investigative capacity and victim services throughout West Alabama.

Probate Judge Rob Robertson emphasized the importance of evolving public safety strategies: “One of these five priorities is advancing public safety, which is paramount, we can do a lot to improve community but if it’s not safe or our stakeholders don’t perceive it as safe, all these other efforts will go lacking.” The Synergic Center continues to prioritize public safety as one of its key strategic initiatives, supporting partnerships that strengthen public safety and protect the community.

This expansion at Synergic Center marks another key effort to support advanced public safety through education, collaboration, and innovation.
